The Nicky Line
Running for approximately eight miles from north Harpenden to Hemel Hempstead, the Nicky Line is a cycleway and footpath following a disused railway line. Along the route you will find grassland with many flowering plant species, cherry, ash, elm and oak trees, and shrubs such as bramble, dog rose, hazel, hawthorn, blackthorn, ivy and, in the spring, bluebells. Every year in May you can join a walk along the Nicky Line, organised by the Council. For further information contact the Town Hall on 01582 768278. Harpenden Common Nature TrailFour miles of common are signposted to take the visitor along bridleways and footpaths through the flora and fauna, wildlife and other areas. Batford Springs Nature Reserve
Set in 10 acres in the floodplain of the River Lea, Batford Springs retains a wealth of wildlife and extensive flora, and watercress beds not cultivated since 1958. Five boreholes created to provide water for the beds still flow but the cress beds themselves are silted up. Since the demise of the watercress beds poplars, willows, sedge and reed have taken their place. For further information contact the Town Hall on 01582 768278. Harpenden Railway MuseumThis private museum is set in a prize-winning garden with signals and other paraphernalia appearing amongst the plants and shrubs, with the Museum Room displaying many elements of railway history. The museum is open on specific days during the summer. For further information contact Sue and Geoff Woodward on 01582 713524.
